Merchants of Doubt exposes the pundits-for-hire who show up on television posing as experts to muddy the science on tobacco, chemicals and climate. I consider this required viewing, because once you see the manufactured-doubt machine, you cannot unsee it. The same handful of tactics gets rented out to whoever is losing an argument with reality. It is a magic trick, and this film shows you the wires.

Based on the book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, it traces how the same tactics were used to muddy debates over tobacco, toxic chemicals and climate change.
