In the aftermath of World War II, the United States launched a covert intelligence program known as Operation Paperclip, designed to secretly recruit former Nazi scientists before they could fall into Soviet hands. Among the most prominent figures brought to America was Wernher von Braun, a former SS officer and lead architect of Germany’s V-2 rocket program, which relied heavily on forced labor from concentration camps.
