This is the CIA's audacious 1954 Berlin tunnel, a secret dig under the Soviet sector to physically tap Moscow's phone lines, one of the boldest operations of the early Cold War. I love it because the ambition is almost comic, we will simply tunnel under the enemy and listen. The twist, that a mole may have betrayed it from the start, only makes it better. Espionage as engineering, and a reminder that both sides were playing this game with shovels.
