Millions of tons of plastic enter the ocean every year, from rivers and shores, ships, and platforms. Scientists around the world have studied the phenomenon and have come to alarming conclusions. Unlike other refuse, plastic stays in the water without breaking down. It becomes trapped in vast whirlpools of garbage called gyres.
