Dukha people - The last reindeer herders in Mongolia
The Dukha, originally from what is now Russia’s Tuva Republic, are among the world’s last nomadic reindeer herders. With shrinking herds, only about 40 families continued the tradition in 1998. Their entire way of life centers on the reindeer, which they treat almost like family. Camps of a few households move across the taiga in search of grazing, and everyone shares herding duties—children included. Women milk the reindeer and make dairy products; men protect the herds in winter and craft tools and saddles.
